Glorious Goodwood Preview And Betting Tips – Day Four

The fourth afternoon at Glorious Goodwood is all about the sublime speed of Battaash, who bids to win the King George Qatar Stakes (3.15pm) for the fourth year running. It's another eight-race card on the Sussex Downs, with action underway from 1.10pm through until 4.55pm and the drying ground now officially 'good'. The Racing Post return with their betting preview and tips for day three of Glorious Goodwood and another top-class card of racing.

1.10 - TDN Australia Handicap (1m4f)

Al Qaqaa dominated a novice contest at Newmarket on his last start and the War Front colt makes his handicap bow, with trainer William Haggas remaining in excellent form and Jim Crowley again seen to strong effect this week at Goodwood. He's a key player but faces a stiffer challenge in this field.

The improving Cepheus could get involved in the finish, while Berkshire Savvy is likely to be played late by Oisin Murphy and perhaps Frankie Dettori can coax Celestran to show his best after what has essentially been a disappointing campaign to this point; he has the talent should he manage to harness it.

MAFIA POWER might be the answer given this should be run at an honest pace. His Newmarket run behind Zabeel Champion (fourth) was in a tactical contest but he was much better suited next time at Haydock when powering clear late on after a more even gallop. The Gleneagles colt should get that here too and looks to have plenty more to offer going up in distance as such.

Selection: Mafia Power

Next Best: Celestran

1.45 - Saint Clair Oak Tree Stakes (Fillies' And Mares' Group 3, 7f)

She's already a dual winner at Group 1 level having twice taken out the Foret at Longchamp and ONE MASTER arrives here on the back of a very pleasing run in the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket three weeks ago.

Similar to her Diamond Jubilee run at Royal Ascot, she was asked to make her challenge from the rear and did well enough to get within a length of the front three at the line over a mile; a trip that she stays but has yet to win over.

A return to 7f in this lesser grade makes the William Haggas-trained daughter of Fastnet Rock the one they all have to beat and she can continue an excellent Glorious Goodwood for jockey Tom Marquand by taking out this Group 3 and confirming recent form with the likes of Agincourt and Under The Stars.

Invitational could mount a stern challenge from the front from her draw in stall three and should be suited back in trip, but perhaps of more interest is Valeria Messalina. Jessica Harrington's filly wasn't disgraced in what is proving a strong Irish 1,000 Guineas on her reappearance last month and she showed the benefit of that when taking the Group 3 Brownstown Stakes at Cork on her next start.

She gets a three-year-old allowance here and remains very lightly-raced. Frankie Dettori paired with the Irish trainer to winning effect at Royal Ascot last month and has sound each-way claims here.

Selection: One Master

Next Best: Valeria Messalina

2.15 - Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes (Group 3, 1m)

KHALOOSY, My Oberon and Tilsit all pitch up here on the back of taking successes on their previous starts. The latter pair did so in novice events and can improve again now upped in grade but they'll certainly need to if hoping to lower the colours of the ultra-impressive Britannia Stakes winner.

Roger Varian's son of Dubawi shot clear of his rivals at Royal Ascot on his first start of the term with a display that strongly suggests he's headed for the top level. He had plenty subsequent winners in behind, including Wednesday's impressive winner here Toro Strike.

This Group 3 looks an ideal stepping stone for the Hamdan Al Maktoum-owned improver on his path to better things.

Repartee has a poor recent run at Newbury to put behind him and so Charlie Hills' wide-margin Newcastle winner Tilsit and the Haggas-trained York scorer My Oberon are feared most; in that order.

Selection: Khaloosy

Next Best: Tilsit

2.45 - Unibet Golden Mile Handicap (1m)

As the betting suggests, this is going to be wide open and Goodwood has shown this week already that some luck in the run is equally as important as talent at times on this track.

That said, PROMPTING is clearly improving at a rate of knots now and last weekend's York scorer could be about to make it 3-3 since joining trainer David O'Meara from Olly Murphy in the spring.

He won that 17-runner handicap on the Knavesmire with something up his sleeve and will be due to go up another 6lb in the ratings when re-assessed. The now drying ground is a plus and the only negative is that Harry Bentley will need to rely on getting the breaks on this hold-up performer from stall two.

Cliffs Of Capri found only Blue Mist too good at Ascot in the International Stakes six days ago and is another turned out quickly before reassessment. He's not been beaten far in either C&D start last year and must be shortlisted again.

Montatham's only defeat in three runs this season was when he finished second in the Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot and he did well to win last time at Sandown in a race that lacked the sort of helter-skelter pace he wants - he should get that now but is up another 4lb.

Sir Busker found only the progressive Motakhayyel too good in the Bunbury Cup at Newmarket last time out - pulling clear of the remainder - and should be on the premises back over a mile as such.

Selection: Prompting

Next Best: Sir Busker

3.15 - King George Qatar Stakes (Group 2, 5f)

This should be the BATTAASH show again as Charlie Hills' outstanding sprinter bids for a fourth successive win. The speedy nature of this track has always been to his liking and having laid down any suggestion of an 'Ascot hoodoo' with a scintillating win in the King's Stand last month; it's hard to see him surrendering this crown.

He wasn't at his blistering best in this last year, but he picked up Houtzen to win cosily with Ornate back in third. If Jim Crowley lets him go from the gates and he makes the running; clear daylight will separate him from the pack at the winning line.

Liberty Beach was third behind him at Royal Ascot last month and having been foiled late by the resurgent A'Ali in a Sandown Group 3 since, last year's impressive Molecomb winner can be second best in this line-up.

Selection: Battaash

Next Best: Liberty Beach

3.45 - L'Ormarins Queen's Plate Glorious Stakes (Group 3, 1m4f)

Desert Encounter won this race last year and will have designs on a repeat after shaping nicely in the Tattersalls Stakes at Newmarket last time. He was behind Communique there however and Mark Johnston's charge has since run second in a Group 3 at York over further.

Alounak was behind both those rivals at Newmarket but he had previously finished well ahead of Communique in the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot. He was runner-up behind Desert Encounter in the Canadian International Stakes at Woodbine last season.

In essence, the top three on the racecard are split by a pound on their official ratings and each has their claims.

Perhaps then this will be a coming of age for the improving four-year-old PABLO ESCOBARR for a William Haggas team in thriving form. His second to Lord North at Newmarket in November reads well now and he's coming into this on the back of two solid runs at HQ and Newbury since getting back from Dubai.

He was just touched off in a thrilling Fred Archer Stakes in June and, back up in trip today, the Galileo gelding might be up to the challenge and he's also got winning Goodwood form to call on, having won his maiden over 1m2f here in September 2018. He's worthy of a crack at these three older benchmarks.

Selection: Pablo Escobarr

Next Best: Communique

4.20 - New Unibet Instant Roulette Nursery (6f)

There's been something to like in all of ZAMAANI's three starts to date. He wasn't far behind subsequent Listed/Group 2 winner Tactical on debut at Newmarket and then finished a pleasing second to Twaasol on his second run at Windsor, with that rival taking the Woodcote at Epsom on Derby Day afterwards.

His third outing brought a decisive success back at Windsor when William Buick merely had to push him out to clear away from his rivals before easing down close to home. The second and fourth from that race were both narrowly denied on their next starts, so the form looks reliable.

He's got to concede plenty weight now going into a nursery for the first time, but he's got the best form and looks to be firmly on the up, while his yard remains in wonderful form recently. He looks the one to be with.

Perotto won a three-runner C&D contest in June and is much-respected as Marcus Tregoning seeks to supplement Wednesday's Sussex Stakes success, while penalised York scorer Julie Johnston and Kempton novice winner Thank You Next can be in the shake up too.

Selection: Zamaani

Next Best: Perotto

4.55 - British E.B.F. EBF Maiden Fillies' Stakes (6f)

A maiden to finish the card and one where the betting is going to be informative. Enoughisgoodenough and Meu Amor were expensive purchases and they join Beautiful News as three newcomers very much to be noted.

Ralph Beckett has continued his fine record at Goodwood this week already and £300,000 breeze-up purchase Meu Amor makes solid appeal on pedigree. She could make a splash on her racecourse bow.

Sarsaparilla has been consistent in all four runs for John Gosden and should be involved at the business end but ready preference is for VENTURA DIAMOND.

The Dandy Man filly had the re-opposing Rhythm behind on debut at Sandown last month over 5f. She didn't get the best of starts and made good late ground to finish fourth, with that form well and truly advertised when Miss Jingles won here on Wednesday.

This extra yardage ought to suit and champion jockey Oisin Murphy takes over now at a track which he tends to ride as well as most, despite his luckless run in the Sussex this week which drew admirable honesty from the rider.

Selection: Ventura Diamond

Next Best: Meu Amor
